The investigative units that comprise the department’s Criminal Investigations Section are responsible for the follow-up investigation of crimes committed against persons or property in the City of Doraville which require a degree of specialization or a centralized investigative approach.

Led by Sergeant Judd Austin, the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) is comprised of six staff members and investigates all felonies, such as financial crimes, property crimes, and violent crimes against persons. CID also investigates some high and aggravated misdemeanors. The Criminal Investigations Division is charged with all crime scene processing, analysis and mapping. CID also investigates alcohol service and  serves subpoenas and search warrant affidavits.

In addition to its regular duties, the Criminal Investigations Division is tasked with educating the citizens and business owners about various crimes and personal protection. The Division regularly gives presentations to groups such as the Doraville Senior Citizens Association, neighborhood associations, and an assortment of financial institutions in the Doraville-Chamblee area. Topics range from identity theft, home security, and bank customer security.  

All major criminal investigations that are undertaken by the Doraville Police Department are conducted by investigators assigned to this division. These investigators are dedicated to investigate these crimes, collect evidence, identify perpetrators and prepare the cases for successful prosecution.

Follow-up investigations of serious crimes are performed by investigators assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division. Additionally, the division also manages the Crime Scene Investigations Unit which provides specialized evidence collection techniques at crime scenes. The Criminal Investigations Division has an on-call detective 24 hours a day/365 days a year.

Sergeant Austin is a 15 year veteran of the Doraville Police Department.  His career has included many different assignments such as Uniformed Patrol, DEA task force agent and currently the Criminal Investigations Division.

Sergeant Austin is an accident reconstructionist, certified explosive breacher, field training officer, computerized voice stress examiner and a tactical rappel master.
